More about Hats On, a division of Topsy Turban Studios, and our mission--
Women suffering hair loss from cancer, chemotherapy, alopecia areata, trichotillomania, or other medical conditions need a source of headwear to make them feel normal. They need headcovering that is stylish as well as practical, affordable, washable and most of all secure and comfortable. We make a variety of cancer hats, turbans, cancer scarves as well as sun hats and more elegant scarves. We design and make the cancer headcoverings here in the United States. Most are made of absorbent cotton (gauze, eyelet, poplin) and they come in a variety of styles and colors. For women undergoing the difficult times of hairloss from chemotherapy, we provide comfort and security as well as fashion. Many of our designs can be worn several ways, some come with separate scarves and all are made to give women suffering from hair loss another option to hot uncomfortable wigs. We have discovered that fabric is key to comfort and the use of elastic is necessary to keep the cancer headwear securely on the head.
Our designer, Tyler Kjar, whose retail site is Topsy Turban.com, has first-hand knowledge of the needs of women with hair loss from cancer. With his wife, he has spent time in the cancer treatment rooms talking to other cancer patients as well as doctors and nurses and he began making cancer turbans for his wife fifteen years ago. He discovered the need for cool fabrics, comfortable styles and secure ways of keeping the cancer hats on the head. Some women try expensive wigs, then throw them away once they realize they are just too hot. Chemotherapy creates heat and the top of the head is where it is released. Under elastic and nylon hair, the temperature probably exceeds 100 degrees. Sunshine also heats up wigs making them unbearably hot! As a designer with a background in the film industry Mr. Kjar feels that women need designs that make them feel normal. Just because they are going through a difficult time, they don't need to feel they have no fashion choices. So he has designed a variety of cancer hats, cancer turbans, sun hats, sleep caps and elegant scarves to give women an assortment of choices for hair loss replacements. He has made them attractive stylish, comfortable, washable, and reasonably priced. Cancer boutiques and hospitals can offer them with confidence to their patients.
